Dear Baltimore City,
I LOVE YOU!
I LOVE BLACK & BROWN COMMUNITIES!
I SEE US!
I LOVE US!
I BELIEVE IN US!
Born and raised in The Bronx, New York, my community was simply amazing. My parents ensured the local drunks, and drug addicts had a place for coffee and to sleep off their most recent binge. I learned how to care for others who may do things differently.
My brother (Daniel Tyrone Taylor) was murdered at the age of 16 years old, in the summer of 1991. I learned the true meaning of community and family. People from far and near came together to love on my family and me, during this difficult time. I learned that the black community unites and empowers in the most tragic circumstances.
Through the years I have lived in Richmond, DC, Lancaster City, and Baltimore – all cities with a large black and brown population.
I have experienced the good, the bad, and the different. But, one common thread I continuously experienced is “LOVE.” The people in these great cities have a love for our communities, families, friends, and country.
So, when the President of the United States made such a derogatory statement about my city – I wanted to scream “We Are Americans Too.”
I am currently raising my family in the awesome Charm City (Baltimore). I couldn’t have picked a better place to live, grow, and enjoy life.
Living in a city reminds me of the connections we all have. Whether you are poor, rich, or middle class – whether you are in a traditional family or same gender loving family – whether you are cis or trans – whether you live in a house, apartments, projects, or condos – We all want one thing, LOVE.
I LOVE BLACK & BROWN COMMUNITIES!
I SEE US!
I LOVE US!
I BELIEVE IN US!
I can’t change the way people look at us or think about us, but I can ensure we see the greatness in ourselves and our future. I am working hard in the GREAT city of Baltimore to ensure black and brown youth sees professionals who look like them and can see the genius in themselves. TruUnity https://TruUnity.com

Thank you, Ruby L. Taylor, MSW, for expressing our thoughts so eloquently. I am also a B’more implant, being the daughter of an USAF-retired TSGT who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Having our ‘home’ changed every 2-3 years taught us how to appreciate the ‘good’ and not to dwell on the ‘bad’ or the uninformed. It is not what ‘people say’ you are that is important, but how you ‘see’ yourself, regardless of where you live. With this world, there are some who uplift and some who try to make themselves ‘feel better’ by attempting to shine a ‘false light’ on others. Baltimore has some remarkable people here who have strived to have world-class public schools with relevant services for all! We lift, hold, and bind up…those who need such. Regards,
You are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your warm regards and love for this great city. May we continue uplifting and healing the amazing city of Baltimore. Sending love and light your way
