S. Dallas Dance, Ph.D. (Richmond, VA)
President & CEO
Occupation: Entrepreneur
I own and manage a consulting practice that works with clients to solve their biggest problems and accomplish their biggest goals through leadership and strategy.
Steps towards Entrepreneurship: After graduating from college, I began my career as a teacher and worked my way up to various leadership positions. Through my careers, I realized I was a natural problem solver, with a keen background in strategy. So, to further my skills, I completed a certified executive coach and strategic planner training program.
1- What 3 tips would you give someone struggling to reach their goals?
Big goals are important, but small steps add up! Start small!
#1 Level up with those whom you surround yourself with; we become whom we spend our time with.
#2 No one can control your circumstances but you.
#3 If you think you’re defeated or not – you’re right! The mind is the biggest organ we must exercise daily! Control your thoughts, and your actions follow.
2- Name the top 3 goals you achieved?
I am still striving toward excellence.
No one is perfect, but every day I want to improve for my family and for me.
Professional goals such as being an accomplished young leader and being nationally known are all well and good, but those things fade.
My biggest goal is still being achieved, and that’s being a great father and growing into a better man! Through an active faith work, I see significant improvements daily.
3- What inspired you to reach your goals?
My mother!
Being raised by a single mother, I always wanted to put a smile on her face. She always taught me that regardless of what people say, you can do whatever you want as long as you believe it! I never wanted to let her down, and even when I thought I did, I truly did not!
4- How did you overcome obstacles to reaching your goals?
Staying focused!
I am my own worst critic, so there is nothing anyone can say to me that is worse than how I beat up myself. But, as I get older, I realize that if society is going to beat the hell out of you, why are you joining in the fight! Stay focused – do your best, and forget the rest.
5- How do you keep your inspiration from decreasing?
Through faith and surrounding myself with people who are most important to me.
Most of us get it confused, believing that some people, whom we give our energy, time, and space to – should be rewarded with such a treasure, and they do not! Value your time, space, and energy; it’s priceless.
