Synthia SAINT JAMES (Los Angeles, CA)
Career: Visual Artist, Author, Speaker & Educator
Steps towards becoming a Visual Artist: Selling my first painting at the age of 20 to a co-worker at the mortgage insurance company that I was working at as a accounts receivable clerk, started my career as a full-time artist.
1.What 3 tips would you give someone struggling to reach their goals?
#1 Lessen your tension by not thinking of it as a “struggle.”
#2 Know that achieving anything important to you will take time, commitment, and work. But when your goal has reached the taste and feel is beyond “sweet.”
#3 Envision yourself as already successful and just do the work.
2. Name the top 3 goals you achieved?
Becoming a professional visual artist – selling my first painting at age 20 and continuing to make a large part of my living from sales and commissions of my artworks – and now celebrating my 50th anniversary.
Becoming a published author of books – children’s, poetry and prose, cookbooks and more.
Traveling to and experiencing several countries and cultures of the world and sharing it through my art.
3. What inspired you to reach your goals?
Self-Determination, my creative passion for painting and writing, and having the encouragement that my mother gave me.
4. How did you overcome obstacles to reaching your goals?
First, by realizing and accepting the fact that there would be obstacles throughout life. Then taking them on one at a time and learning how to overcome them through research (reading and study) and the “trial and error” approach – “If at first, you don’t succeed try, try again.”
5. How do you keep your inspiration from decreasing?
By keeping centered – listening to my “ inner voice,” the spirit inside of me, and gifting myself with the time and space to do so each day. I do so on my solo early morning walks with prayers and affirmations and again just before falling asleep.
